Mastopexy and Breast Augmentation – Two breast procedures but are they friend or foe?

by Terrye Tebbetts

Question ~

how many patients have a lift in addition to augmentation? has anyone out there heard that the two contradict each other? Meaning that you make you breast envelope smaller with a lift and you then expand it with the implant, therefore create more tissue expansion. Does this cause more problems later on?

Answer ~

You got it exactly right! A mastopexy seeks to make the breast envelope smaller by taking out excess skin, while a breast implant seeks to make the very same envelope larger!

If someone needs s lift, it means they did not hold their own breast weight very well over time. A breast implant is nothing but fake weight.

Most breast implant surgeons will do both operations at the same time, but …… it certainly does open yourself up to variables (healing, symmetry etc) that could go wrong over time.

And too, if you could just lift a breast and reposition the patients own breast tissue and put it in a smaller home (or breast envelope) and she could enjoy a firmer, perkier breast…..could she be happy with that and never have to mess with an implant? You never know this if you do both operations at the same time.

It worries me when I see (and I see it alot on this forum) where women are having lifts and still getting 350 plus implants! They are destined to a horrible reoperation cycle with these types of decisions.

Again, it all comes down to reconciling what you want with what your body will realistically and safely allow you to have.
